The Copeland Scroll compressor has a scroll or spiral, orbiting in a path defined by a coincident fixed scroll. The fixed scroll is attached to the compressor body. The orbiting scroll is attached to the crankshaft and rotates in orbit instead of rotating. The orbiting movement creates a series of gas pockets that move between both scrolls. In the outer portion of the scrolls, the pockets aspirate gas and move it to the center of the scroll, where they unload it.
As the gas moves through the inner pockets, which are becoming smaller, the temperature and pressure increase to the desired discharge pressure.
